But taken as a whole, with interludes of throat singing and undercurrents of Arabia and Beastie Boy rap then you might just have wandered into a benign nightmare in which you’re chased by mulletted monsters with turned up jacket sleeves. Where Hall and Oates were the kings of the Great White Funk Brotherhood, Koot Hoomi, a reincarnation of the god–like Solyoni and friends, reduce the songs to quivering sketches or menacing furballs coughed up from the heart of a band in awe of the originals.
