Ryan McMullen of Ashlands Attic
A little Q&A with Ryan McMullen, lead vocalist and keyboard player for Ashlands Attic.
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself, and your band.
Ryan: I have always had a deep love for music that is fun, yet sometimes makes you think about life and society. My band Ashlands Attic started as a fun way for some friends to jam and write some songs, but eventually it grew into something more serious when we discovered that we were actually making good music.
LB: How did you start out making music?
Ryan: I have been singing since I was just a wee lad, and I started making music in bands at the end of high school and the beginning of college.
LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now?
Ryan: I grew up listening to The Beatles, Queen, Fastball, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd and lots of other classic rock playing on my dad's radio. They all influence my idea of what rock music can be, which is fun, serious at times, and important because it creates a soundtrack for our lives.
LB: Tell us about your latest release.
Ryan: Our latest release "To Shelley, With Love" is an eclectic album full of sounds that will entertain you and make you want to get up and dance. It's perfect music for a sunny day at the beach or a country road excursion.
LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows?
Ryan: Ashlands Attic is always trying to book shows wherever we can. We play out at least 2-4 times a month if we can get booked. The audience will expect an energetic show, sometimes some free drinks, and sometimes some free giveaways, but mostly they will just leave satisfied from hearing our mix of originals and covers.
LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy?
Ryan: I love playing music and writing music. Personally, recording music for me can take hours of waiting, don't get me wrong I love the end product, but I always prefer getting on a stage and sharing my music with others because it's an instant gratification.
LB: Where can people find (and buy) your music?
Ryan: People can always find our music on our MySpace, Facebook, or our website (links below). You can buy our music on CD Baby and iTunes. You can always buy our music at one of our live shows and we'll even autograph it for ya at no extra cost (laughs).
