Ego And The Ids – Another Sad And Bizzare Chapter In Human History (Independent)
The spelling mistake in the title is all their own work, not mine, and combined with the cover art / graphics it has a look about it that is a touch amateurish, as if a committee decided on this cover art. It’s as if they have tried to give the whole thing a depth, but it comes off as only ankle deep, in fact. I am not sure that it conveys their message, of what the music herein is actually all about, either.

The music, it has to be said, is somewhat different. Based upon Arthurian legends (hence track titles “Merlin Conjures The Dragon”, “Guinevere” and “Lady Of The Lake” to quote just three), this album takes in Goth overtones and undertones, is given a Prog twist, with a combined influence of symphonic tone and experimental leaning. Say what?

It is hard to capture the spirit of the piece (a concept album, then?) in words when, if you listen to it, the music will tell you in sound. My point is that reading about it is almost self-defeating. Suffice to say, if you doff your cap to Sisters Of Mercy, Marillion, Dead Can Dance, and late period Pink Floyd, you might be very interested in what is going on here. So long as you also accept the dramatic style, and a musical link to a familiar story. If you can do this you may well consider this musical project a very good thing indeed.
