The New Evils – Piece Of Tomorrow (Rue Records)
Are these five Salt Lake City musicians the great lost (but ultimately more cuddly, in a purely musical sense, of course) brothers of The Supersuckers? Or did they arrive through warped time from the 60s, a band bent on mischief from the hallowed halls of those times, where music making usually took place in the garage? If it ain’t one, brother, then it sure is the other. You can try listening to this at home if you want, but it’s so much better to play it with the pickup windows all the way down as you barrel down the highway, crossing those wide-open plains or deserts, and heading for one of those great American cities that is just over the horizon.
Yes, I was just guessing about the pickup thing, although I do have a good track history of cruising along the Pacific Coast Highway with Neil Young and Pearl Jam’s Mirror Ball blaring away from our Mustang stereo, closely followed by NIN’s Further Down The Spiral. If this had been available back then I would most certainly have had it sharing the airspace, and been proud to let people know it too.
This is great fun. It is great fun because it is great music. It is great music because it is the very essence of rock and roll. It is the very essence of rock and roll because I said so, and I’m betting that you will agree. So there you have it - ‘nuff said.
