Trip Lava: Octatroid

Trip Lava – Octatroid (Shark Records)
A quick scan of the album’s credits and a glance at Trip Lava’s MySpace page confirms that Octatroid is the work of just one man: Joel Lee.

Trip Lava is a project Lee began half a decade ago, to explore the many coloured shafts of musical light that make up the psychedelic and progressive soundscape. Octatroid, a 37 minute sci-fi concept piece revolving around an ‘heroic robot warrior who saves a village from a destructive evil robot named Gurgblah’ goes to work, from its outset, on the experimental nature of his chosen genres. The episodic format and ingrained otherworldliness of Lee’s vision takes the listener on a weird and wonderful instrumental trip through alien minds and universes, but gets us back in time for a slap-up tea. Michael Moorcock will surely approve; as Buster Crabbe would have, too. Fans of Zappa, This Heat, Sun Ra, and contemporaries like Animal Collective should take note.
