That’s quite a set-up, though Young’s songs merit the attention. Starting with “Possibilities”, it’s arrangement reflecting wide-open spaces with lyrical attributes that echo the sentiment. “Something In Your Eyes” is first-rate twang infused power-pop, with the band playing with all the vim of prime time Replacements or The Attractions. Perkins earns his money on “Nicotine & Tar” and “Loretta” might be just be the best thing here, a great song with monstrous barbs and a loose alt. country backing – names like Nick Lowe, Old 97s and Whiskeytown spring readily to mind. If you’re a fan of old-school alt. country, like a bit of pop mixed with twang, or just on the lookout for a singer-songwriter with something to say, Nick Young may well be your man.
