Brian Charles
A few words with guitarist-singer-songwriter Brian Charles, of folk rock duo James Curry.
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself, and your band...
Brian: I was born in Minnesota. The home of Bob Dylan and Prince. I also currently play in a folk rock duo named James Curry. I have just released my first solo album "Border Town" - I hope you enjoy.
LB: How did you start out making music?
Brian: My first instrument was a Trombone. I played in marching bands from elementary school to junior high. I began songwriting and playing the guitar when I turned 15. Been playing gigs and recording albums for the last 20 years. Wow!! The years roll by quick.
LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now?
Brian: Big fan of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits. I really enjoy the song writing aspect of these artists. The lyric and spirit of the song is a necessity. I am unable to sing a song unless I can connect to the words.
LB: Tell us about your latest release.
Brian: I am currently releasing my solo acoustic album, “Border Town”. The album is one man with one guitar and one voice in the tradition of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. I have been a singer songwriter for most of my life, in Minneapolis-based James Curry, and now “Border Town”, which is my first solo endeavour.
LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows?
Brian: Yes I play live all over the state of Minnesota. I pride my live shows as being intense and spiritual. Basically I give it everything I have every night. Original songs all night long.
LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy?
Brian: I enjoy the songwriting process. It really feels like a creative spirit overcomes me when I am songwriting. Extremely enjoyable. I guess creating just about anything is one of life's sacred events.
LB: Where can people find (and buy) your music?
Brian: MySpace (please follow link).
