Kate Gaffney - The Coachman (Dig Music)
This is an album that spans several musical styles - and it works. "Falls Bridge" has the same boogie shuffle groove in its introduction as Clapton's “Lay Down Sally”. "Fallen For The Road" has an easy reggae style that suits her voice. Gaffney is an interpretative singer who is clearly comfortable with various different styles. She also does an interesting arrangement of Woody Guthrie's "Philadelphia Lawyer", however, the title track is the jewel in the crown, with it's restrained playing adding to the tension of the song. The production by Barrie Maguire (Natalie Merchant) and the playing is top drawer. Well worth an investment. www.myspace.com/kategaffney
