James Dunn - The Long Ride Home (Shuteye Records)
I wouldn't go as far as to say I've seen the future of rock n’ roll, but this is a bloody great album! Am I allowed to say bloody in a review? I don't bloody well know! This whole album cooks from the get go - a really rocking Americana record. Think of Mellencamp and Springsteen at their "blue collar" best, and you’re in the right territory. It’s hard to pick stand out songs, because they ALL stand out, thanks to top notch playing and catchy songs. However, the title track "The Long Ride Home" and "The Old Woman" deserve special mention. The former just rocks, with organ, and brilliant slide guitar to the fore The latter is a story song in the vein of Guy Clark or Steve Earle, with great accordion playing adding a melancholic texture. Many artists talk about passion and sincerity in their music, this album oozes both those attributes. It is quite simply the best album I've heard for many a year, and that includes new releases by my own personal favourites. Don't just sit there reading this review, go and buy it! www.jamesdunnmusic.com
