Castle Oldchair Newborne Slime / Kid Primitive Family White Light (Perpetual Motion Records)
This split disc presents Castle Oldchair’s “Newborne Slime”, with a second part, Kid Primitive Family’s “White Light”, included as a tribute to the former. With the exceptions of “Interlewd” and “Outerlewd” that feature looped acoustic guitar clatterings this is an acapella recording. These outsider vocalisations represent some strange positions admist schizophrenic ramblings, Mongolian throat warblers, primal scream therapy, human beat boxing and children’s naïve experimentation with tape recording.
With a production which is extremely lo-fi, it is sprinkled with electronic squelches, most likely from toys, and the only near comparator would be the outer extremities of Moldy Peaches madness.
The second half has perhaps a little more structured, with its chants and an echo that imitates the space in a church. Closing track “In Heaven” with its looped vocal drone is magnificently rewarding.
The sleeve art perfectly captures the content of the disc: a mirrored reflection of a room with an Indian man mediating in one half whilst in the other a child cowers beneath the bed from the red slime that is slipping in through the window. Spiritualism and trash culture are given an equal platform.
