Paul Curreri - California (Tin Angel Records)
Recently singer-songwriter Paul Curreri has been somewhat overshadowed by wife Devon Sproule who has released two critically acclaimed efforts since his last album dropped in 2007. In the mean time he has sustained a vocal cord injury, which prevented him from touring. Not that you could tell from California, which continues where The Velvet Rut left off. Curreri can be seen as something of an American Richard Hawley. He displays a flawless crooner style, which suits his subtly African influenced music perfectly. His sixth album is full of well-executed ideas, from the nostalgic western of “I Can Hear The Future Coming” to the bluesy grit of “Down By The Water”. Sproule pops up for a duet on the cover of Michael Hurley’s “Wildgeeses” and the result is the best track on the album. Expect Curreri to be back joining his wife in the spotlight soon.
