Auld Lang Syne – Midnight Folly (Viper Bite)
From Rochester, NY, Auld Lang Syne are one of the bands at the forefront of an exciting new wave of Americana and alternative country. Whether these up and coming artists will make the same lasting impact as their predecessors, only time will tell, but in the meantime, there’s no doubting that there are some interesting new records out there. Midnight Folly is one of them. It’s full of dark, moody tunes, and in vocalist Timothy Dick, they’ve got a front man haunted by the ghosts of Johnny Cash and David Ackles. In other words, the musical definition of American Gothic country, with a band in tow, fully aware of the legacy of Crazy Horse, Uncle Tupelo and various grunge bands in plaid. Slow, soulful and with serious intent, Auld Lang Syne’s take on contemporary alternative country owes plenty to the past whilst simultaneously sounding like a new dawn for a genre.
