Pisces Syndrome – S/T (Independent)
Pisces Syndrome, a four-piece from Brisbane, Australia, play moody indie-rock, in touch with some sort of blues tradition, but equally enamoured with the sound of Seattle, circa 1990. Indeed, vocalist Luke Hobbs has a style which sits cheerfully alongside Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell, without hitting the turgid emotional depths of either. This isn’t a bad thing. We can all live happily without a new Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, and with the tiniest Americana influence insinuating itself into the Pisces Syndrome sound, it’s to the mighty Buffalo Tom that comparisons are most easily made. Now, this is a good thing. “Slip/Slide” impresses early on with Matt Newton’s guitar winding around the rhythm, touching, but never overpowering Hobbs’ vocal. With subsequent spins, layers are exposed. When they put their blues influence centre stage on “Gnawing At My Lead” they slow it down, applying considerable tonnage and a speaker worrying density to their sound.
