Bipolaroid - E(i)ther Or (Surreal But Kind)
After the driven space rocker, “Day in the Life of a Raincloud” that declares the proceedings open, “E(i)ther Or” quickly immerses itself in recreating 60’s psychedelia, which I’m sure will be pleasing to many. However, the perspective is particularly narrow, and draws almost exclusively from early Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett’s solo work. The free associations, nonsense and nursery rhyme imagery, obscure couplets and bedraggled vocal delivery that are intrinsically Syd, are plundered and mimicked to the point of pastiche. There is certainly a place in the first decade of the 21st century for hippy-trippy-dippy-dom to counter the masses of off-the-peg instant-arena-filling-generic-pop-packages… but… although no doubt made with the best intentions, Ben Glover’s Syd vocal affectations distract from some quite lysergic guitars, warped mellotron(?) and some freaked-out grooves.
