Skittish –The Perfect Shade Of Green (Independent)
There’s a list of musicians on the inside cover that would give Bellowhead a run for their money – 13 at the last count – but in this instance, there’s nothing unlucky. These 13 musicians (based around the duo of Jeff Noller and Vonnie Kyle) have produced a record of extravagant dimensions (2 discs / 24 self-penned tracks) and varied lineage (indie folk, anti folk, indie pop, alt rock, progressive - you name it!). The singing is just as varied, too. A solo male voice is followed by a choral approach, then a solo female voice, perhaps next a duet – it’s anything but predictable.
These Minnesotans seem to have taken all of their influences, put them in a blender, and let it just pour out. It wouldn’t have worked for any old band, but believe me, this isn’t any old band. At their worst, which only occurs on a few tracks on the second disc, they resort to show-tunes, an all out song and dance type thing… although you can’t see the dance, of course, so it gets a bit thin. But overall their liquid approach, producing tracks that have a seamless and delightful bounce to them, without being on overdrive all of the time, is a tonic for the ears, and a delight for anyone who needs a bit more ‘spring’ in step.
