A little Q&A with JJ Calicott, singer-songwriter-guitarist with The Cross-Tie Junction Band.

Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself, and your band.
JJ: I am a singer songwriter from the great state of Arkansas. I have written over 75 original songs, which are all under copyright, registered with BMI, and are being offered to artists in Nashville by a professional plugger. The reception has been very positive and I am very close to a recording deal. My band is made up of seasoned musicians, drums, keys, bass, and I play guitar. My music is influenced by many artists and genres, over many years. My style is southern rock and country with a touch of blues, a little funk, and a lot of fun.

LB: How did you start out making music?
JJ: Started playing cover music of anything I heard at an early age. Worked with several local and regional bands. Dropped off the radar for a while and now I am back full throttle.

LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now?
JJ: I loved everything from traditional country, southern rock, pop, soul, blues, even big band. Guitarists like Hendrix, Page, Billy G with ZZ and a host of country pickers. Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, even Roy Clark amazed me with their playing

LB: Tell us about your latest release.
JJ: My current CD "Same But Different" has eight original songs that reflect my personality as well as my diverse musical tastes. The title cut; “Same But Different”, “Wishing On Star”, and “Three Steps To Love” are my three favorite cuts. I have enough material ready for future recordings that I feel exceed the first release and identify my style even more.

LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows?
JJ: I love live shows. I guess what folks can expect is the unexpected. I do mostly my tunes mixed in with a few familiar covers based on the venue, crowd and the event. If you want to be at a fun and entertaining show with great music, come out and see. We will play most anywhere we can get a stage and a few people to listen, clap, dance, or sing along. I frequently do volunteer music for nursing facilities, challenged adults, and even churches. All my stuff is clean but I spare no punches with the mix of music we offer.

LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy?
JJ: Performing my tunes surrounded with quality musicians for a fun and energetic crowd is the ultimate. I love the stage, the lights, but most of all the people. I strive to be a positive influence for younger musicians, listeners, and even kids to look up to.

LB: Where can people find (and buy) your music?
JJ: CD Baby, Amazon, iTunes, almost any online music store has “Same But Different” ready for download. Myspace and Reverbnation also have samples.
