Fiction: To Build a Fire

Reviews
Fiction - To Build A Fire (Independent)
California based Fiction is the band name of Jason Perlman, together with a rotating group of musicians who aid and abet. Three long years in the making, “To Build A Fire” is complex and multifaceted, but equally vibrant and utterly unafraid to let rip and rock.

The first thing you’ll notice is the layers. There’s a real depth and resonance; strings, or keyboards that sound like strings, church organs and of course, guitars, provide sounds as varied as neo-classical intros to metal riffing, with in-between, plenty of nods to a plethora of stylistic codes, including classic rock, modern prog and early ‘90s grunge. Perlman’s vocal packs all the power and cavernous qualities of Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder, and lyrically he’s a brooder, comfortable plying his trade in the shade, and probably resigned to a glass half empty.

Standout tracks come thick and fast. “Levitation” alternates between early ‘70s AOR craft and something much more significant– it’s an impressive start. “Night’s Crusade” provides a substantial guitar workout and the slower and acoustic “Waterline” is no less notable. The playful “Dead In The Road” seems to take its inspiration from Led Zeppelin and “Ruin You” is classic contemporary metal, with shades of Dio and Maiden.
