Johnny Tanner: Wake Up John

Reviews
Johnny Tanner - Wake Up John (Independent)
Johnny Tanner’s song “Wake Up John” won the Gospel category in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest this year, and here it is, the title track of Tanner’s second album, his first long-player for 16 years. The song, an old style country spiritual, provides a perfect start to an album that is steeped in the Americana tradition, encompassing country-folk, gospel, bluegrass and blues. His voice, a latter-day variation of John Prine’s low-burn croon, is perfectly apposite to his songs, which reflect his oneness with the natural world (Tanner is a vegetable farmer), and his faith.

Accompanied by his wife Sharon, who’s backing vocals are an absolute delight, there’s a stress-free, relaxed feel to the songs, whether they’re for listening or dancing to. Their openness to roots music in its various forms it to be applauded, and much like an old comfy chair next to the fire, once you’ve made its acquaintance, you’ll be back for more.
