Barney Bentall – The Inside Passage (True North)
Barney Bentall’s name will be well-known to those of you familiar with his previous bands: Brandon Wolf, who released a couple of indie albums and one for A&M, and The Legendary Hearts, who were signed to Columbia, and were big sellers in Canada in the ‘90s. Now back to his indie roots, his second solo record treads a well-worn roots-pop route, heavy on country instrumentation, but equally enamoured with big tunes and solid hooks. Roaring out of the gate with the urgent “Hold My Heart”, Bentall sets his stall out early, and delivers a succession of thoroughly likeable songs with maximum whistle-ability. Think along the lines of Tom Petty with extra pedal steel and fiddle and you wont go far wrong.
