Jookabox - Dead Zone Boys (Asthmatic Kitty)
Turning the experiences of growing up in 90’s Indianapolis into a zombie musical may seem like a strange choice for a third album but for those previously acquainted with Jookabox (formerly Grampall Jookabox), it seems ideal. And when it works to such a profound effect, what’s not to like?

Dead Zone Boys pulls off the neat and almost impossible trick of being eclectic yet coherent. There is the helium induced “Don’t Go Phantom” which bounces phosphorusly along, the electronica of “Zombie Tear Drops” and the hypnotic psychedelic pounding of “Gonna Need the Guns/Doom Hope”, yet it all fits neatly together like a jigsaw puzzle. Albeit a mutilated, infected jigsaw puzzle. The standout comes right at the death, the catchy “F.I.T.F #1” which begs desperately for repeat plays.

Jookabox are clearly brave, but not only that, they have a complex vision and they’ve succeeded in pulling it off. Dead Zone Boys is never too heavy or tense, is fun without being ridiculous and is dark without being depressing. It would be almost too easy to say it sounds like an album from one of the Elephant 6 collective but it really does. Frontman David ‘Moose’ Adamson delivers his lines with an instantly likeable, cool perfection and every song retains a pop hook over its twisted background. Jookabox have reached a new pinnacle in what is surely going to become a successful career.
