MissFire and the Detonations
A little Q&A with Julia Johnson (AKA MissFire); singer with MissFire and the Detonations fame.
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourselves. Julia: I’m a mechanic by trade and have a day job teaching Auto Tech classes at the local college. Paul works in corporate cube-land during the day. He just got his own office - that means his cube walls go all the way to the ceiling. I call that moving up. Chad makes art out of cabinetry. He can do some amazing things with stain and chains. Ask him to try it on your kitchen. Victor is a music teacher and college kid extraordinaire. He's busy learning the ins and out's of SOUND. We all share the desire to create Roots music - whatever you want to call it - Rockabilly, Hillbilly, Rock-n-Roll, Honky Tonk, you name it - with a twist. We've welded MissFire's smart ass commentary to ass-kicking drums, smokin' guitar and thumpin' bass and came up with what we call "Sassabilly".
LB: How did you start out making music? Julia: The band came about as a result of my complaining about always getting the shitty parking at car shows. "If we were a band," I reasoned, "we could show up late and STILL park in front!" Thus, the music was born.
LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now? Julia: It would be easier to list who we haven't listened to. Truly, we're an eclectic bunch and it shows in our music.
LB: Tell us about your latest release. Julia: We just produced our first CD - aptly entitled "MissFire and the Detonations". We rented a studio and a sound guy for one day and we originally intended to do 4 songs. But we got so damn excited about being in the studio that we managed to knock out 10 songs in pretty short order. It came out pretty good for a first try!
LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows? Julia: We love to play live! Especially if beer is included. Our songs deal with the human condition - from bikini waxes to lazy boyfriends, boozy relationships and women wrenching on cars. Its loud, raw, an sometimes (way) too fast.
LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy? Julia: Truthfully - I enjoy band practice the most. We're all good friends and we enjoy getting together for good music and Chad's killer BBQed chicken.
LB: Where can people find (and buy) your music? Julia: Our music can be purchased at Rockabilly HQ and CD Baby, and if you're looking for something to do while your boss is at lunch, try our MySpace page.
