Nell Robinson A little Q&A with bluegrass vocalist Nell Robinson.
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself, and your band. Nell: I sing and write bluegrass and old-time country music. I am backed by a smokin' band called John Reischman and the Jaybirds. My old-time duo, the Henriettas, were just featured on the American NPR program with an audience of 4 million people. Yahoo!
LB: How did you start out making music? Nell: I sang alone in my car for 25 years... and then at an anniversary party sang a song to my hubby and then just couldn't stop.
LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now? Nell: I grew up with Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton. I like the old-time country sound rather than country rock.
LB: Tell us about your latest release. Nell: "Nell Robinson in Loango" - is inspired by the rural Alabama farm where my family has lived for many generations. I included my first two original songs and bonus tracks by my duo, the Henriettas.
LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows? Nell: Yes. They can expect sweet, sexy, country vocals, hot pickin', great three-part harmonies, rippin' instrumentals, rollicking energy and a very interesting mix of songs.
LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy? Nell: I enjoy getting in close to a song the way you do when you record. The music just continues to reveal itself.
