No Name In Sight
A few words with Graydon Campbell, lead vocalist and pianist with No Name In Sight
No Name In Sight
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself, and your band.
Graydon: I am a University student here in Canada, and I am taking a Bachelor of Music degree at Carleton University. Besides the piano and vocals, I also play the clarinet, guitar, ukulele, some drums, and many more!
The rest of the band consists of Collin Pretty on drums, and Adam Purchase on bass guitar. I have known Collin for years and we both met Adam about a year ago, when he joined us.

Musically, we are a band that is fairly upbeat and enthusiastic about making great music. We've just released our first professional album called "They Built Walls."

LB: How did you start out making music?
Graydon: Personally, I started playing music at a very young age. Ever since I've constantly been writing and playing music whenever, and wherever I can. I write the music for the band, as well, and experimental and contemporary music at University.

As a band, we were formed in 2007. We each bring our different musical preferences to the song-writing process. Even though I am usually the one who writes the bulk of the music, the other guys add in their own style. Adam brings in a little of his metal side in his bass parts, and Collin brings some of his Jazz training into the mix. Collin also occasionally writes lyrics. When we reach our finished product, it is a very unique and rich sound. Since we are only a trio, we constantly strive to make our music as full sounding as possible. I think we do a damn good job too!
Lyrically, we usually write on different feelings and morals, and yes the occasional love song.

LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now?
Graydon: I grew up listening to my parent’s rock music such as Elton John, Billy Joel and Genesis. The piano styles of Elton and Billy have shaped how I play the piano. Since I was originally trained as a classical pianist, I suppose I bring a little of that to my sound as well. Ben Folds has also influenced my musical style as well. As a band, we are sometimes compared to Ben Folds Five and their sound.

LB: Tell us about your latest release.
Graydon: We've just released our first professional album called "They Built Walls." We recorded it in July / August 2009 here in Ottawa. It is a culmination of our music from the past three years. It ranges from upbeat pop tunes such as "Hold On", to smashing rock ballads "Physh", to relaxed, chill tunes such as "Monkey Bars." It was an amazing experience to record this album, and we had a blast doing it. We are very proud of the result and the great reviews we have had for it!

LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows?
Graydon: We do! We play locally here in Ottawa, at bars, clubs, and occasionally Universities. You can expect a fun show with songs ranging from upbeat rock tunes, to softer, more thoughtful ones. We strive for playing shows that are appealing to all ages, as well as diverse musical tastes.

LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy?
Graydon: We love playing our music and seeing people enjoy it! We make music for our enjoyment, and ourselves and it's just a huge bonus when others enjoy it too! All we want is to get as many people as possible to hear our music.

LB: Where can people find (and buy) your music?
Graydon: You can buy our newest album "They Built Walls" at CDBaby and many other places! You can listen to our music at our Myspace and our website. Links below!
