Hurricane Doyle - S/T (Independent)
Is it time for a new era of Americana twenty years after the height of the No Depression bands? This year has already seen fantastic releases from the likes of Magnolia Summer, Tin Star Orphans and The Duke and the King whilst more experienced favourites such as Richmond Fontaine and The Deadstring Brothers have added to their already impressive catalogues. In the shape of Nashville’s Hurricane Doyle comes yet another name to add to that list. The self-titled debut contains just nine songs but each one a flawless nugget of rock and roll. “Begging Sweetly” is a great introduction to the quintet, “Die Like A Rockstar” echoes Drive By Truckers at their best and “Jesus Help Me” is pure Stones. Larry Mell Morgan’s vocals channel the spirit of Ronnie Van Zant as the three guitars situated behind them combine to form what maybe can only be described as ‘The Hurricane Doyle Sound’.
