Sans Gras: Retrograde Motion

Reviews
Sans Gras – Retrograde Motion (Independent)
From: Australia
Genre: Psychedelic / Post-Rock
Influences: Blackrebel Motorcycle Club, Caribou, TV on the Radio.

The Word: “The schizophrenic indie rock trio Sans Gras hail from Melbourne, where band mates Cayn Borthwick, Kent Windress and Tyler Kuulberg set up shop in late 2009. A one-time sax prodigy explores rock as the ultimate form of energy expression, jamming with an ethnomusicologist and a film-student. Drawing on a range of influences Sans Gras use guitars, keyboards, computers, loops, drums, percussion, horns, bass and vocals to create unique sounds and driving beats.

Cayn and Kent met when they moved in to the same share house; each of them had gravitated to Melbourne for the music scene and instantly talked of starting a project together. Of course it took Windress moving out a year later for any real progress to begin, largely thanks to Borthwick’s involvement in acts such as The Legs, Dead River Deeps, Tiger Funk and Dardanelles. Their frenetic jamming bore the fruits of “Sketches”, a completely D.I.Y. recording made from $2 shop materials and left in the pamphlet sections of café’s in Melbourne.

Elated by the warm response of random café go-ers the duo set about producing another recording under the moniker Cayn Borthwick Band. “Volume 1” was released in may 2009 through Green Media (MGM). It contained extremely varied songs and received a lack-lustre response as a whole, except for the songs 30 ml and Steal of Justice which gained moderate air play. Feeling the lack of bass in their sound they turned to good friend Tyler Kuulberg to fill the sonic gap and take over all things visual.

2010: a time of jamming, a (much needed) name change and the coalescing of the Sans Gras sound. After much gigging and good times Sans Gras are proud to release their first EP, Retrograde motion.”
