Brian Ledford – Truth & Love (Independent)
Texan Brian Ledford has delivered a solid, promising effort here. The Fort Worth native, grandson of Okie jugband players, cut his teeth on the college scene fronting The Stilettos. A move to Seattle found Ledford playing ‘ballsy alt rock with a dash of Brit-Pop’ thrown in for good measure. On this record Ledford’s high tenor is backed by a strong rocking band that includes some notable electric guitar work from Matt Brown, especially on “Judging From A Safe Distance”, and fine pedal-steel courtesy of Jon Hyde. Perhaps we get to see the ‘real’ Brian Ledford on the quieter numbers like “Sensible”, where the acoustic vibe contrasts with the rockier numbers. “Back And Forth”, another acoustic based track; is framed by tasteful electric power chords and Hammond organ. The production, arrangements and playing are impressive for an independent artist. Brian Ledford has an expressive voice, I’m sure he will continue to grow as a writer and player 6/10.
