Dieter Moebius – Kram (Klangbad Records)
As a founding member of Cluster and Harmonia and a former Eno collaborator, any release by Dieter Moebius is instantly appealing.  “Kram” translates as 'Stuff' and opener, “Start” and closer, “Markt” adhere to this implicitly, being chaotic, rambling montages of mostly aimless sound.  “Kommt” brings the Motorik, where the repetition evokes a sense of travel, for which Moebius is synonymous. The landscapes over which are traversed are imaginably varied, be it pastoral, “Dauert” which slows the pace, mountainous and difficult, as implied by the rough, edgy throb of “Steigert” and urban industry is induced along the way. Kram’s second half seems to leave this world altogether and has a more robotic, Sci-Fi feel. Moebius has adopted an abstract approach to his music making; that the pieces are never really resolved serves only to enhance the thematic endless journey into the infinite void. Overall it never quite errs on the side of techno but is certainly not ambient enough to simply wash over the listener.
If Stuff - a term for non-specific objects and materials - is its intention, then the collection could be described as clutter, which is in turn very nearly Cluster!
