Magnolia Summer – Lines From The Frame (Undertow)
Magnolia Summer advertise themselves as an Americana super group of sorts. This seems to be fair enough when you consider that members of the Bottle Rockets and Finn’s Motel lie within their ranks. However, this takes nothing from Magnolia Summer as a band in their own right. Lines From The Frame is eleven tracks of pure, unashamed No Depression style alt. country, which buzzes with all the energy of Stranger’s Almanac. Opener ‘Like Setting Suns’ could easily have been written by Ryan Adams et al, and ‘Birds Without A Wire’, featuring Glossary’s Kelly Kneiser, is clearly possessed by the ghosts of Whiskeytown and Uncle Tupelo. Magnolia Summer don’t do anything groundbreaking and neither do they claim to. Indeed there are few in the game who can do this thing better and even less who can write a standout track like ‘Shortwave Decline.’
