Sam Sims A few words with singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Sims.
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself, and your band. Sam: I grew up in Alabama but have lived in many different places. I’m always trying to travel to different islands to get a feel for their musical vibrations. I have played with many people but my latest trio is with Greg Smith and DC Fisher. They are excellent!
LB: How did you start out making music? Sam: Well, I’ve always played since I come from a musical family. It wasn't until I was 14 that I really got serious about songwriting and getting inspired. I remember hearing my cousin play a riff and I think it was shortly after that when I knew how much music was going to impact my life.
LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now? Sam: I always listened to Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and Bob Marley. There are so many artists, and I try to listen to everything I can get my hands on. Early on I listened to the Travelling Wilburys, Roy Orbison, Men-at-Work, and Richie Valens a lot.
LB: Tell us about your latest release. Sam: "Moments" is really meant to spread a message about living in the present. So many times we’re worried about what’s going to happen tomorrow or what happened in the past. It's that kind of mentality that can waste your whole life. All we really ever have is right now. I think Eckhart Tolle sends out a similar message in his books.
LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows? Sam: We have played hundreds of local gigs and some gigs outside the area. Sometimes we have a good draw and other times we don't... it really just depends on the circumstance. We do have some very loyal fans and that's what means the most.
LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy? Sam: I like to watch the songwriting grow. I think every record we do gets better… or at least I hope so (laughs). Also, knowing that people are enjoying what we do is really awesome. If someone is riding around in their car listening to our music, then that's the best compliment.
LB: Where can people find (and buy) your music? Sam: The new record is available at CD Baby. All of our songs are also available on iTunes among other on-line distro sites. Our website is the best place to keep updated on all that stuff. Links below:
