Steve Ox
A little Q&A with German singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Steve Ox.
Leicester Bangs: Tell us a little about yourself. Steve: I am 38 years old, and I’ve been making music since I was 19. I played the guitar in a couple of bands, and sometimes sung background vocals. Ten years ago, I started recording my own songs at home, mostly with heavier, existential themes, about hard times and wasted years. I record in any style I like, for example Southern rock, pop, funk, blues, acoustic guitar music, etc.
LB: How did you start out making music? Steve: I started making music when I was in a psychosomatic hospital, where I learned to play the guitar good.
LB: Who did you grow up listening to and how do they influence what you’re doing now? Steve: I grew up with the music of the 80s, and the first half of the 90s. My favorites are Tom Petty, R.E.M., The Connells, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd and The Wallflowers.
LB: Tell us about your latest release. Steve: My latest Release is “Hide Away”, a song I wrote nine years ago. It’s about men who are hiding from life. It’s about me, because this is my story, too. The style of the song is Southern rock. When I wrote this, I was very much influenced by Tom Petty.
LB: Do you get out and play your music live, and if so, what can an audience expect at one of your shows? Steve: No, I don’t play live yet. Maybe later. I’m looking for a band.
LB: What aspects of playing and recording music do you most enjoy? Steve: I enjoy the feeling and the inner peace that comes with playing music. Its like therapy. When recording, I enjoy the process when it becomes something want it to be.
